They're Doing across America What They Executed to Christianity

The Trump phenomenon's most revealing and defining occasions – not its most important, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of a few weeks, the nation's leader began displaying everyone his designs for a lavish reception room two times larger than the White House and then began independently demolishing the eastern section to construct it.

He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of casualties resulting from his reductions to international aid is 600,000 and rising, and recently a study projected his petroleum strategies would result in fatalities an additional 1.3 million. However nothing as distinctive. No former leader would have attempted – truly, no other president would have imagined – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom conduct transactions with public institutions.

We moved from 'the gentle will obtain the Earth' into 'the humble will perish of cholera'

As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive attempt to overturn the old idea of democracy and exchange it with its polar opposite, there is one large group of Americans who should not find it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us – in older age cohorts a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.

We have witnessed over the years as politically conservative religious groups turned the Jesus we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hostility who approves precisely the cruelties that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred more slowly, through multiple decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disturbing via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.

A Harmful Christianity Gains Ground

Hence I shall explain the Jesus that I grew up with, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the rapidly expanding group of Americans could have minimal awareness of him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.

It is emphatically definitely not the story of a mighty king appearing; rather, a baby is born to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid undercover officers. The baby grows up in humble circumstances, an employed craftsman; his message is about love for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not simply tender feelings, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and housing. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to educate the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing is that if a person pilfers your coat you must offer them your pullover as well.

The obvious and direct fact that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a type of radical love centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christianity something of a scandalous religion: appealing to the general public, but owing to its natural unconventionality requiring to be restrained. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution – Protestantism was so widespread that it practically baptized the status quo.

A Battle for the Finest Within Us

Therefore I have felt heartened to observe the steadfast resistance against Trump develop during the previous year. It has provided substantial consolation to help build the movement that has taken to the streets in rally after rally, and seems to have inspired citizens to turn out in significant amounts during minor elections. We will need to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags throughout each rally and requests to the highest qualities in US history.

We shall be interrogated ... regarding how you welcomed the immigrant? Did you receive him and receive them or reject?

America is best defended, in other words, by relationship to the highest in US heritage, exactly as the Christian faith is most protected by relationship to what makes it distinctive and magnificent, specifically the model of the Savior. In neither case does it imply pretending the most negative regarding America and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both modesty and conviction, a combination that genuine US believers ought to accept.
