Powerful Cyclone Fung-wong Strikes the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Massive Evacuations Reported

The island nation has been hit hard by Super Typhoon Fung-wong, which left at least two people dead and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Authorities reported that the powerful weather system triggered widespread sudden floods, coastal inundation, landslides, and fierce gale-force winds, leading to the relocation of millions of people across the country.

Widespread Damage and Emergency Operations

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, emergency crews recorded rising waters reaching the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house engulfed in flood in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer explained. One resident frantically contacted us, reporting his home’s roof was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We rescued him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities announced at least two deaths: a drowning victim in Catanduanes and another who died after her home gave way in eastern Samar.

Storm Intensity and Forecast

The intense storm was downgraded to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, where the capital is located.

Per the state weather service, its maximum winds decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The storm system is projected to lose strength while heading in the direction of Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service indicated it was still working to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres were activated to temporarily house tens of thousands of households.

Previous Storms and Climate Impact

Fung-wong struck shortly following another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for before moving on to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Searches for those still missing were halted on Sunday due to safety concerns for rescue workers.

The climate crisis is making cyclones more intense and frequent. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation this year.

Scientists report that the rate of intense cyclones striking the islands has risen by more than 100% over the last two decades.

Global assessments indicate that severe weather events result in approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines every year.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and anticipated impacts from the new storm.
